Master of Advanced Studies in International and European Security

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) is jointly run by the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and the Global Studies Institute (GSI) of the University of Geneva.

It is based upon the internationally recognized training expertise of GCSP’s Leadership in International Security Course, a course on international security policy entering its 33rd year, and the long-standing academic expertise of the Global Studies Institute of the University of Geneva.

The MAS attracts participants who serve in the broad area of security policy, be it in government, military, private sector or international institutions and agencies engaged in security-related policy planning and decision-making.

Key benefits for you

The MAS is designed to advance participants' knowledge and skills in order to prepare them for leadership roles in government as well as international and non-governmental organizations. In particular it will:

  • Develop participants understanding of, and capacity for, leadership in a security policy environment;
  • Enable participants to conduct a critical analysis and assessment of the effectiveness and legitimacy of security policy options and responses;
  • Transfer knowledge and experience via peer-to-peer interaction and the sharing of expertise;
  • Strengthen the skill-set for leadership roles in a multi-cultural and cross-institutional environment;
  • Enable participants to generate constructive and sustainable solutions to security threats and complex conflict dynamics.

Why you should attend

The MAS provides an environment for critical academic reflection, the development of key skills and knowledge, and creates a network of outstanding security leaders, integrating them into a wide community of security experts and policymakers.

  • It will enhance your understanding of a broad range of security issues ranging from human to hard security - in national, ‘world-regional’ and global contexts.
  • Furthermore, it will enable your ability to better identify the evolution of key challenges, analyze the inter-linked nature of issues, and assess the efficiency and effectiveness of policy responses to arrive at sustainable solutions.
  • An innovative and interactive course methodology is applied, which involves a focus on both expert-led sessions including case studies, simulations, and collaborative peer to peer learning.

Faculty profiles

Participants will benefit from the expertise of highly qualified academics, experienced diplomats, government officials and distinguished practitioners from around the world during this full-time course.

Degree awarded

Participants who complete the programme successfully will be awarded a fully accredited Master of Advanced Studies in International and European Security (60 ECTS) by the University of Geneva and the GCSP.
