As part of the Geneva Peace Week, the GCSP will provide a space to consult on Assessment of Achievements and Challenges of the High Level Review of United Nations Sanctions.
The UN Security Council utilizes sanctions with increasing regularity to address evolving threats to international peace and security. Sanctions have also developed as a tool to support governments and regions working toward peaceful transition, provide protective support, and act as a deterrent against violence.
Greater awareness of the purposes and requirements of sanctions implementation mechanics within the international community, affected regions, and the public, is necessary so they can be better understood and implemented. It is widely recognized that in order to function effectively, sanctions require ongoing and sustained attention and enhancements, such as the High Level Review of UN Sanctions Practices offers, the resulting HLR Compendium with over 150 recommendations for the promotion of fairer, more accountable, transparent, and more effective UN sanctions (Official UN document in six UN languages).
Participants to the Geneva Peace Week are invited to offer their comments in consultations on the “Assessment of Achievements and Challenges of the High Level Review of United Nations Sanctions” (click link for the Concept Note) and to share their views and comments on the following thematic clusters:
