Peace and Justice: Women’s role in Reconciliation

An Executive Conversation with Ms Elisabeth Rehn

An Executive Conversation with Ms Elisabeth Rehn

Location

GCSP - Maison de la paix

Ms Elisabeth Rehn addressed issues in peace and justice and women’s role in mediation, peacebuilding and reconciliation.

She spoke to how empowering women and girls will change the dynamics within these processes. She highlighted the problematic prioritization of peace over justice, how justice is devalued when it is not delivered timely, and how only when leadership is genuinely interested in women in peace time as well as war can their participation and security be better assured.

The discussant was Professor Paul R. Williams from American University as well as President & Founder of Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG) that provides pro-bono legal assistance to states and governments involved in peace negotiations, post-conflict constitution drafting, and war crimes prosecutions.

Professor Williams highlighted the high rate of failure in the durability of peace agreements today. He provided some practical ways to address this failure: first and foremost greater inclusivity of disenfranchised groups in peace talks; intensive capacity building of women, youth and civil society; amplification of the voice of the moral authority and not just those in positions of power; facilitation of a network among the disenfranchised. He also touched on how disenfranchised group leading on core issues can bolster their participation throughout the process.
