Writing on the Wall: Redefining Security and Law

Global Fellowship Initiative and Alumni Workshop

The GCSP Global Fellowship Initiative and Alumni Workshop “Writing on the Wall: Redefining the Nexus between Security and Law” brings together senior diplomats, military advisors, legal experts, policymakers, and researchers from International Geneva and Bern to debate contemporary challenges and co-develop new insights on how law affects decision making in the security realm.

The workshop consists of a theoretical introduction on how international law affects security policy, three group working sessions, and a joint discussion of takeaways and recommendations. The workshop concludes with a cocktail with the GCSP Director, GCSP fellows, GCSP alumni, and GCSP staff.

The group working sessions cover the following topics:

  • International Humanitarian Law, Contemporary Conflicts, and Pressing Challenges - Tobias Vestner, Cluster Leader, Security and Law
  • The Nexus between Conflict, Rule of Law, and Security in a Complex Environment - Carlota Ferrero, Cluster Leader, Peacebuilding
  • The Influence of the Humanitarian Paradigm on Arms Control Law - Marc Finaud, Cluster Leader, Arms Proliferation

In order to best respond to the challenges faced by policymakers, GCSP is eager to build on the vast experience and expertise of the global GCSP community. Accordingly, the outcomes of this workshop will shape the GCSP’s new activities in the field of security and law in 2017.
