Colonel (GS) Guido Maene was born in Etterbeek (Brussels) on the 25th October 1960.
He began his career by gaining a Master of Science degree in Ballistics and Telecommunication at the Polytechnic Division of the Royal Military School and joining the Army Signal troops. As a junior officer, he was first member, then chief of the project group which developed the strategic telecommunication network of the Belgian Defence. At the end of his Staff course, he joined the Army Staff in the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Policy and Plans Section, responsible for Tactical CIS and electronic warfare (EW). In this position, he held Belgian seats in different NATO Working Groups.
After gaining his GS degree, he was appointed commanding officer of the BEMILTEL Group, responsible for the operation and maintenance of all military Strategic CIS networks.
He had the opportunity to successfully attend the International Training Course in Security Policy (ITC) at the GCSP, after which he became a military professor at the Royal Defence College in Security and Defence issues, teaching civilian and military participants of the GS Course, as well as aspirant-diplomats.
Becoming chief of the Corporate CIS section in the Material Resources Directorate, he was responsible for the procurement and the maintenance of all Corporate CIS systems of the Belgian Defence.
Afterwards, he became a Non-Resident Defence Attaché in the Strategic Affairs Department, in charge of the bilateral defence relations between Belgium and the following EU and NATO countries: BGR, CHE, DNK, FIN, IRL, ISL, NOR, ROU, SWE and GBR. Colonel (GS) Maene was co-founder of the Belgian GCSP Alumni Association (B-GCSP) in 2007. He was elected the first President of the B-GCSP, a position he continues to hold.
Colonel (GS) Maene is married and has one daughter and two sons.
