Edward Girardet is a British-educated Swiss-American editor, journalist, author and media consultant who has covered humanitarian, conflict, and development for over 30 years. A former special correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor newspaper and US Public Television’s NewsHour, Girardet has worked in numerous countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Central America, including conflict zones. He was a co-founding director of Media Action International, a Swiss NGO formerly known as the International Centre for Humanitarian Reporting. He also has been an advisor to Media21 in Geneva.

Girardet has written for leading magazines and newspapers including National Geographic, Financial Times, International New York Times, The Guardian and Foreign Policy. He has also produced or otherwise reported numerous television documentaries. Girardet has written and/or edited over a half a dozen books including Afghanistan – The Soviet War; Populations in Danger with Médecins sans Frontières; Somalia, Rwanda and Beyond – The role of international media in humanitarian and conflict zones; Killing the Cranes – A Reporter’s Journey Through Three Decades of War in Afghanistan as well as The Essential Field Guide to Afghanistan (now in its 4th fully revised edition).

Girardet is currently a co-editor of The Essential Edge, an online global writing magazine. He has just been appointed part-time outside editor of UN Special – The Independent Magazine on International Geneva.
