The GCSP's Deputy Director and Academic Dean Professor Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou was invited for an interview with Radio Télévision Suisse after a man attacked a German train with an axe in Bayern on 18 July.
Professor Mohamedou explained that what is happening now, after this attack and the previous one in Nice on 14 July, is an illustration of ISIS’ strategy: a diverse operating method in which anyone can participate. As many examples show, this strategy encourages improvisation. After, Professor Mohamedou elaborated on the question of history. This form of radicalization, even though it has been perceived as a new phenomenon, has happened before albeit with other ideologies. Professor Mohamedou went on to explain that this radicalization stems more from people’s own personal experiences or criminality, and the connection or claim to religion follows after as a form of validation.
