Head of Programme Carl Ungerer Contemplates Next UN Secretary General

The process for selecting the next United Nations Secretary General is notoriously tangled and vague, but GCSP's Head of the Leadership, Crisis and Conflict Management Programme Dr Carl Ungerer broke down the current situation and analysed what will likely be the next steps in the process.

As a previous advisor to former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd, Dr Ungerer examined how the UN Security Council will likely remain in deadlock, opening the way for a candidate not currently on the short list to be nominated. Dr Ungerer is critical of the current system, as power politics take precedence over the future of the United Nations.
