GCSP Deputy Director moderates panel on Preventing Violent Extremism

Last week, the GCSP Deputy Director and Academic Dean, Prof.Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou, moderated a panel discussion on Preventing Violent Extremism: Issues and Challenges.

The Consulate General of Switzerland worked with the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations and the GCSP to host this panel at the Residence of the Swiss Consul General in New York City, providing analysis on what needs to be done at the international, national and local levels to effectively prevent violent extremism. The event built on the discussion started at the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism - The Way Forward, which took place on 7-8 April 2016.

The questions centered around one of the greatest challenges of our time: How does protection of human rights contribute to preventing violent extremism? How to develop prevention policies at the local and community level? How to empower youth to prevent violent extremism? How to address online radicalisation and strengthened strategic communication? How to mobilise the necessary resources?

The panel addressed guests from the diplomatic, foreign affairs, think-tank and academic communities, presenting their expert opinion on experiences and best practices related to the prevention of extreme violence.
