Successful Completion of the 6th Weapons Law and Legal Review of Weapons Programme

From 5 to 9 December 2016, GCSP held the 6th Weapons Law and the Legal Review of Weapons Executive Programme.

Led by Dr William Boothby, Associate Fellow at GCSP, and Prof Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg, Law Professor at Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), the course offered world-class teaching in international law regulating weapons. Moreover, the course taught the skills to conduct a legal review of weapons – a review which according to Article 36 of the 1977 Additional Protocol I of the Geneva Conventions is compulsory for states when introducing new weapons, means, or methods of warfare.

The executive programme welcomed a variety of professionals from around the globe, such as a military legal advisor from the United States, a diplomat from Mexico, and a member of the Nepal Red Cross Society. For the first time, the course had a higher number of female than male participants.

According to participants, the course empowered them to:

  • Better advise commanders for employing weapons in the battlefield;
  • Effectively conduct a legal review of weapons;
  • Develop new ideas for diplomatic initiatives related to weapons;
  • Better argue when communicating on weapons-related issues with governmental officials;
  • Efficiently start a new governmental position in the field of international humanitarian law.

GCSP will continue to engage the new GCSP alumni, and wishes them much success in their professional career. GCSP is eager to continue to strengthen the implementation and understanding of international law in the security realm through its Security and Law activities.
