Workshop on the implementation of the Biological Weapons Convention

On 3 August 2015, the GCSP and the Implementation Support Unit (ISU) of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) organized a half-day workshop on implementation of this treaty on the eve of the annual Meeting of Experts of States Parties.

Some thirty participants from Permanent Missions from the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East attended this event.

The head of the ISU, Daniel Feakes, and its Deputy, Ngoc Phuong van der Blij, recalled the provisions of the BWC and the main topics to be addressed by the Meeting of Experts.

Scott Spence, from VERTIC, spoke of national implementation measures and ways and means to strengthen them, in particular in their legislative dimension. Jean Pascal Zanders, from CCDP and The Trench, discussed Article VII of the BWC on Assistance in case of violation of the Convention.

Finally, Marc Finaud, from GSCP, outlined the issues deriving from Article X on Cooperation and Assistance in peaceful uses of biology.
