Engaging Youth to Prevent Violent Extremism

“Engaging Youth to Prevent Violent Extremism” by Dr Christina Schori Liang, the GCSP’s Terrorism and Organised Crime Cluster leader, was published in the November 2017 edition of the “UN Special” Magazine.

The article discuss one of the most significant challenges faced by millions of youth between the ages of 10 and 24; the problem of “being targeted by violent extremists, who recruit them in refugee camps, religious institutions, universities, and via the internet.”

After describing some of the main characteristics of the environments in which young people are most vulnerable to recruitment by violent extremist groups, Dr Schori Liang highlights the importance of including the “whole of society,” especially the youth, in designing effective strategies for preventing violent extremism (PVE).
