How can the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) prevent gender-based violence?

In an article for UN Special, the United Nations magazine of international civil servants, GCSP Senior Programme Advisor Mr Marc Finaud discusses how the Arms Trade Treaty achieves broader goals of reducing gender-based violence and achieving wider gender equality.

"The historic ATT offers a genuine opportunity to reduce human suffering in general, and gender-based violence in particular," writes Mr Finaud. "If effectively implemented, it will obligate its states parties to refrain from exporting weapons where they could be used to commit human rights violations, including acts of violence against women and children."
