Defence and Diplomacy

The emergence of new, non-state actors with regional weight and the growing complexity of world politics due to the emergence of new global powers set the scene for a renewed and transformed relationship between defence and diplomacy.

Both are complementary and important instruments in the hand of a state to reach strategic goals. There is a need for a better understanding on how these instruments can be applied, beyond ‘technical’ aspect, including other aspects such as diplomacy, economy, governance and social issues. Thus, the role of diplomats, military officers and senior officials involved in defence and diplomacy is important, challenging and manifold.

The Defence and Diplomacy Cluster seeks to help create a secure, stable and prosperous international and regional environment by building and maintaining trust between friendly armed forces and countries. Defence and Diplomacy is located at the junction between the foreign and the defence ministries.

Experts provide tools, skills and knowledge to better understand, and act, in the global and regional context that diplomats confront. These modules have a global outreach, with courses conducted in regions with key security challenges. With participants from around the world brought together for these courses, exchanges of experience are unique and highly valuable. An additional benefit of this training is the development of a professional network between defence officials from various countries that lasts over years. Thus, if a crisis occurs, alumni of these courses are able to connect with each other and coordinate the crisis management of their organisations.
