American Security Policy and the Upcoming Elections
9 January 2008
The American elections will mark not only a critical change in administrations, but also an important chance to review American security policy which is disputed and controversial now in the Iraq/post-Iraq era. The themes have been low key, but for those who wish the United States well or ill, there have been fundamental signals from each of the most favoured candidates concerning Iraq itself and the various legacies of the Rumsfeld doctrine and specific security policies.
The discussion was chaired by Prof. Catherine McArdle Kelleher, and the speakers were Prof. I. M. (Mac) Destler, Mr. Reuel M. Gerecht, and Dr. Cindy Williams.
American Foreign Policy and International Order after George W. Bush
14 November 2007
Dr. Stephen J. Stedman, Professor of Political Science, addressed the questions of future American foreign policy and prospects for international order at a public discussion at the GCSP on 14 November. With one year remaining in the presidential administration of George W. Bush, analysts are already speculating about how U.S. foreign policy will be defined by the next president. The U.S. relationship with international institutions and other states is of great concern globally, and there is widespread interest in whether major changes in American foreign policy might follow the 2008 election.
