Background Information
On 20 December 2005, upon the recommendation of the UN Secretary-General and his High-level Panel, the Security Council and the General Assembly, “acting concurrently”, adopted resolutions 1645 and 60/180 establishing the new UN Peacebuilding Commission. The Commission will be responsible for addressing a critical gap within the UN and the global system by providing a coordinated, coherent and integrated approach to post-conflict peacebuilding and facilitating dialogue amongst key actors. Against this backdrop, the GCSP with the financial support of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, launched, in early 2006, a project entitled “The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission and International Geneva”. The main objective of this project has been to assess the implications of the work of the new Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) and its Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) for International Geneva. In particular, it sought to explore how the PBC can best assure that Geneva-based stakeholders can add value to the work of the PBC, in terms of country specific operations, norms and standards setting, lessons learned reviews and strategizing peacebuilding operations. |

Within this project, we are currently developing the International Geneva Peacebuilding Guide. The guide seeks to gather information on the various Geneva-based organisations, which are engaged in post-conflict peacebuilding, brought together in one practical reference guide. The guide would include contact details, as well as a description of the organisation’s specific activities that contribute to building sustainable peace. The intention of the guide is to raise awareness of joint capabilities in the field of post-conflict peacebuilding and to put the expertise specific to ‘International Geneva’ at the disposal of the international community in general and the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office in particular. The guide will be published online and launched at the 12 September workshop.
The creation of an International Geneva Peacebuilding Guide is part of the ongoing GCSP peacebuilding project and is made possible by the support of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The project is conducted in close partnership with the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO), the Programme for Strategic and International Security of the Graduate Institute of International Studies (HEI) and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF).
