The 3rd International Training Course for Defence Attachés was held in Amman, 7-14 November 2009

For the third consecutive year, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) organised a training course on “New Trends in Global and Regional Security” for military officers already posted or slated to be posted as Defence Attachés in their countries' embassies abroad. This course was hosted by the Royal Jordanian National Defence College (RJ-NDC), which greatly contributed to its success.

The GCSP Contributes to Staff Course in Morocco, 18 March 2009

On 18 March 2009, for the fourth consecutive year, two faculty Members from theGCSP contributed to an eleven-month Staff Course organised by the Moroccan Royal College for Higher Military Education (CREMS) in Kenitra. Mr Marc Finaud, Director of Short Courses, delivered two lectures, one on the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) and the other on European-Mediterranean Cooperation. Col (GS) William Gargiullo, Chargé de Mission, spoke on "The Role of an Officer in a Multinational HQ". The course, delivered in French, was attended by some thirty officers from Morocco, other Maghreb and African countries and one European country. Mr Finaud and Col Gargiullo also had a working meeting by the Commander of the College and his Deputy with a view to preparing a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions for further cooperation.

NATO/PfP Building Integrity in Defence Establishments Workshop
Kabul, 9 - 11 February 2009

The aim of the workshop, which was held at the National Military Academy in Kabul (Afghanistan) was "to strengthen the foundation for leadership, integrity, good governance and management within the defence and security sector by sharing experiences, challenges, and best practice between nations, whether established, transitional or developing, to enhance professionalism".

For the second year, from 8 to 15 November 2008, the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) organised a course for Defence Attachés jointly with the Royal Jordanian National Defence College (RJNDC) in Amman.

Defence Attachés from NATO/PfP and the Middle East
Amman, Jordan
28 October - 7 November 2007

For the first time, in partnership with the Royal Jordanian National Defence College and thanks to funding from the Swiss federal Department of Defence, the GCSP conducted a ten-day training course for military officers in Amman (Jordan) from 28 October to 7 November 2007. This course was attended by 10 Jordanian officers and 25 officers coming from 23 countries belonging either to NATO/PfP (Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, and Ukraine) or to the Middle East and North Africa region (Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Mauritania, Oman, Qatar, Sudan, and Tunisia).

Seville, Spain
28 November - 1 December 2006

From 28 November to 1 December 2006, the GCSP, in cooperation with the Foundation Tres Culturas (Seville) and with the financial support of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, carried out a training course in international security policy for civil servants and military officers from the Maghreb countries. The course was held in Seville, Spain, and covered issues such as international terrorism, arms control, peace support operations and Euro-Mediterranean relations. It was attended by participants from Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. From the GCSP side, Dr. Derek Lutterbeck was responsible for the course.

Tunis, Tunisia
11 - 13 May 2005

From 11 to 13 May 2005, the GCSP conducted a first seminar on international security policy in Tunis in cooperation with the Ecole Supérieure de Guerre. The seminar was attended by some 40 military officers with the rank Lieutenant Colonel and higher. Topics covered by the seminar included peace support operations, arms control and disarmament, and new security challenges. In the coming years, the GCSP intends to organise similar seminars in cooperation with the Ecole Supérieure de Guerre as well as other institutions in Tunisia.

Algiers, Algeria
18-20 April 2005

On 18 - 20 April 2005 in Algiers, the GCSP organised for the first time, together with l’Institut Diplomatique et de Relations extérieures d’Alger (IDRI), a seminar on “diplomatic protocol”. The opening ceremony was presided by Mr. Smail Benamara, General Director of IDRI, in the presence of Ambassador Michel Gottret, Swiss envoy to the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria. Col GS Gargiullo – Charge de Mission at GCSP, organised the seminar.

The 30 Algerian representatives from different ministries and institutions participated in the seminar. The event was integrated in GCSP activities within the frame of the Mediterranean Dialogue.
