Defence Attaché Orientation Module in Dakar, Senegal, 11 - 19 May 2009

From 11 to 19 May, the GCSP organised a Defence Attaché Orientation Module in Dakar, Senegal, for French-speaking West African countries, which was hosted by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Senegal.

Fifth Orientation Module for Defence Attachés
23 - 26 February 2009

From 23 to 26 February 2009, the GCSP organised its fifth orientation module for Defence Attachés. 36 participants from 22 countries, including countries from Europe, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and Côte d'Ivoire, attended the course. Ms. Katharina Vogeli, Deputy Director of the GCSP, opened the course and Colonel (GS) William Gargiullo, Chargé de Mission, directed it. The module was divided into four blocks: Function of the Defence Attaché; Simulated Defence Attaché Tour; Protocol; and Visits to various international organisations in Geneva.

This Orientation Module was greatly appreciated by future Defence Attachés as it provided a good overview of the multitude of activities that such a position entails. The simulated Defence Attaché Tour consisted of a demonstration of two artillery batteries in the field.

Fourth Orientation Module for Defence Attachés
17 - 21 February 2008

From 17 - 21 February 2008, the GCSP organised its fourth orientation module for Defence Attachés. 40 participants from 23 countries, including European countries, countries from the Middle East, Central Asia, China and Senegal, attended the course. Ambassador Dr. Fred Tanner, Director of the GCSP, opened the course. Prof. François Heisbourg, Chairman of the Foundation Council of the GCSP, gave the keynote address and Colonel (GS) William Gargiullo, Chargé de Mission, directed the course. The module was divided into four blocks: Function of the Defence Attaché; Simulated Defence Attaché Tour; Protocol; and Visits to certain international institutions of Geneva.

This Orientation Module is very much appreciated by future Defence Attachés as it provides a good view of the multitude of activities that such a position entails. The simulated Defence Attaché Tour comprises notably a demonstration of two artillery batteries in the field.

Third Defence Attaché Training Module
19 - 22 February 2007

From 19 - 22 February 2007, the GCSP organised the third orientation module for Defence Attachés. Forty participants from 24 countries attended the course. GCSP Director, Dr. Fred Tanner, opened the course, Ambassador Raimund Kunz, Head of the Directorate for Security Policy, Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports, made the keynote address, and Colonel (GS) William Gagiullo, Chargé de Mission, directed the course.The module was divided in four blocks: function of the Defence Attaché; simulated Defence Attaché Tour; protocol; and visit of international organisations.

Second Defence Attaché Training Module
20 - 23 February 2006

From 20 to 23 February 2006, the GCSP organised the second training module for Defence Attachés. Twenty-nine participants from 23 countries attended the course.

Dr. Fred Tanner, GCSP Deputy Director, opened the course. Mr. François Heisbourg, Chairman of the GCSP Foundation Council made the keynote address and Colonel (GS) William Gargiullo, Chargé de Mission, directed the course.

The curriculum included a balance of theoretical and practical instructions, including protocol, new threats, and discussions with former and current Defence Attachés.

Training Course for Defence Attachés from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Egypt
30 October - 8 November 2005

From 30 October to 8 November 2005, the GCSP, represented by Dr Derek Lutterbeck and Col (GS) William Gargiullo, conducted the Training Course for Defence Attachés for eight participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and two participants from Egypt.
The course focused on different aspects of international security policy, such as Euro-Atlantic security institutions, WMD proliferation, land mines, transnational organised crime, human trafficking and information warfare.

This course is part of the general cooperation between the Swiss Armed Forces and the GCSP.

First Defence Attaché Training Module
28 February - 3 March 2005

From 28 February to 3 March 2005 the GCSP hosted a Defence Attaché Training Module. Thirty-two participants attended from 20 countries, including 12 from the GCSP long-duration courses, ITC and ETC. The programme included a balance of theoretical and practical instruction, including a "Simulated Defence Attaché Tour", diplomatic protocol, new threats, and discussions with former and current Defence Attachés from a number of countries. At the closing dinner, the participants heard an address from the Deputy Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces, Major General von Orelli.
