Lecturing at ETH Zurich
"Strategic Studies" Winter Semester 2006 / 2007
Between October 2006 and February 2007, the GCSP lectured a class of officer students at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, www.ethz.ch. This class (bachelors programme) was comprised of 15 officer students in their 5th semester. The responsible faculty member, Karl-Heinz Rambke, organised a series of 13 lectures and with the support of the GCSP Director, Fred Tanner, and his colleagues, Thierry Tardy, and W. Pal Sidhu, during which current thinking about strategic issues were introduced. Main topics included threat and risk perception, the role of international organisations (UN, NATO, EU) for peace and security, the conflict management cycle, the concept of human security and the utility of force in the beginning of the 21st century. The mandatory examination was successfully carried out on 2 February. Karl-Heinz Rambke will again, with the continuous support of the GCSP faculty, be in charge of a second series of lectures starting on 23 March, this time for the 4th semester of the bachelors programme.
