Enhancing Leadership for Peacebuilding

Senior Level Course on Peacebuilding

The challenges to the exercises of effective leadership in peacebuilding contexts are multiple. On the one hand, international peacebuilding policy and practice remain anchored in doctrinaire definitions that do not sufficiently reflect the real challenges of building sustainable peace in conflictive, polarized and violent societies. In addition, this five-day leadership course provides an opportunity for current and potential leaders to enhance their understanding of sustainable peacebuilding and the Leadership styles that can hope to achieve it. They will also learn how to apply this understanding to their own situations.

The course has been run by the GCSP, in partnership with Interpeace and UNITAR, on behalf of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland since 2009.

The course targets current and potential leaders actively engaged in peacebuilding challenges, most notably representatives of:

  • international organisations, including UN, AU, OAS, ASEAN, EU and the League of Arab States
  • national institutions, including government, ministries, commissions and the security sector
  • civil society, including traditional and religious leaders, NGOs, INGOs, trade unions, media, business, professional associations and women’s groups

Participation is limited to 24, based on a competitive selection process, and is gender balanced. Full attendance is required.
