Public Discussion at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
ASEAN marks its 50th anniversary, the perfect timing for an assessment. On the balance, a striking economic performance (a combined GDP of more than 2.5 trillion USD), and a remarkable platform for regional political and security cooperation that can draw in its fora the world’s great powers, from India to China, Japan, Russia and the US. On the other side of the balance, its modus operandi, which favors consensus over efficiency, prevents it from decisively using influence to lever its interests in major challenges, such as the territorial disputes, in particular in the South China Sea, or from mitigating the damaging consequences of growing competition between China and the US.
The Secretary General of ASEAN, Mr Le Luong Minh, will present and discuss his views on the ways to project ASEAN in its next half century and to enhance ASEAN capacity to perform in the face of increasing regional and global challenges.
GCSP Senior Programme Advisor Dr Christina Schori Liang will moderate the discussion.
A light lunch will be served from 12:00
