Building the Evidence for Better Prevention

Geneva Peace Week Event

Part of the Geneva Peace Week

Research from the Institute for Economics and Peace and that commissioned by the World Bank for the study on preventing violent conflict, Pathways for Peace, have calculated the highly cost-effective nature of peacebuilding interventions and conflict prevention. This is largely because the cost of war and conflict is very significant and the interventions to prevent it are comparatively very small. While there is significant evidence around the cost of conflict and what conflict prevention costs, there are still large gaps in understanding why some countries fall into conflict and others do not.

More problematic is the lack of evidence and understanding of the actual effectiveness of peacebuilding approaches. Without this critical information, it is not possible to craft systematic and strategic approaches to conflict prevention. Part of the solution is developing data and evidence that guides more strategic and holistic approaches to understanding peacebuilding needs and integrated responses to conflict risk.

In partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, the GCSP is hosting a Panel discussion on how to strengthen prevention and peacebuilding strategies in an era of political and financial uncertainty. What can research tell us about the cost effectiveness of conflict prevention? What does a successful peacebuilding approach look like? What are the current peacebuilding requirements and to what extent is there convergence between the strategy of peacebuilding expenditure and real peacebuilding needs. What information is required to develop and deliver effective peacebuilding? What types of innovations are suitable, taking into account the current international climate, with unprecedented numbers of displaced people and nationalist sentiment in traditional donor countries? How can we “do more with less”?
