Director of Programmes, Small Arms Survey
Dr. Anna Alvazzi del Frate is the Research Director of Small Arms Survey (SAS), a project of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Before joining SAS, she spent more than twenty years working for the United Nations, at UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) in Vienna, and previously at UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute), in Italy and in Angola. She also worked as a researcher and lecturer in sociology of law and criminology at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. She is a social scientist with vast experience in applied research for evidence-based policy making. A specialist in the application of quantitative and qualitative research methods – in particular surveys on crime and violence – in developing and post-conflict settings, her research interests include firearm violence, crime and violence prevention, monitoring and evaluation, with particular attention to gender aspects.
Dr. Alvazzi del Frate holds a Doctorate in Criminology from the University of Bologna, Italy. Author of numerous articles and books, she is a member of the EU Group of Experts on the Policy Needs for data on Crime, the World Society of Victimology, the European Society of Criminology and the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS).
