Director of Defence and Military Analysis, IISS
Dr Bastian Giegerich is Director of Defence and Military Analysis at the IISS, where he leads the team that produces the annual flagship publication The Military Balance, oversees the development of The Military Balance Plus online database, and contributes to research and consultancy work in his areas of expertise. From 2010-15 he worked for the German Federal Ministry of Defence in research and policy roles, also serving as the IISS Consulting Senior Fellow for European Security. His responsibilities in Berlin included advising on European military cooperation as well as strategic foresight analysis and speech writing. Before returning to the IISS in 2015, he was a member of the Ministry of Defence task force preparing the 2016 German White Book on Security Policy and the Future of the German Armed Forces. A graduate of the University of Potsdam (Germany), he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Maryland (US), a Research Associate at the National Defense University in Washington DC and a Project Manager at the Aspen Institute Berlin. Dr Giegerich obtained his PhD at the London School of Economics (LSE). He has taught International Relations, Military Studies and Public Administration courses at LSE, the University of Potsdam and the University of Kassel (Germany).
