International Policy Division, Australian Department of Defence
Elizabeth O’Brien is on sabbatical from the Australian Department of Defence, where she has worked in the Directorate of Operations and International Law and, more recently, the Middle East Operations and South Asia teams within the International Policy Division. In these roles, she has developed strategic policy, facilitated intra- and inter-governmental relationships and managed large security sector reform projects.
Ms. O'Brien has a particular interest in the interaction between gender issues and security policy, and has worked on the implementation of the Department of Defence’s strategy for cultural change. She has a strong belief in the power of small, well-targeted projects to catalyse organisational advancement. She is hoping to use her time at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy to undertake a comparative analysis of how defence forces address gender issues.
