Sustainable Governance of Future Outer Space Colonies

In a globalized world, security can no longer be thought of as a one-track, zero-sum game involving states alone. Instead global security (and that includes space security) is better analyzed through the lens of the multi-sum security principle, whose five dimensions include human, environmental, national, transnational and transcultural security.

In 2016, SpaceX announced its plans to send humans to Mars, with the end goal of colonizing the Red Planet. But what reasons are there to establish such a colony? Could we humans even survive and thrive away from Earth? If we can, what form of relations could exist between Earth and future colonies? Further, what form of governance should colonies adopt?
