Last week, media agencies worldwide announced North Korea and South Korea will carry a single Korean flag at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
But, what does this actually mean?
GCSP’s Marc Finaud, Senior Programme Officer for the Emerging Security Challenges Programme, Cluster Leader on Arms Proliferation and former French diplomat, was interviewed by Phoenix Satellite TV to get an expert opinion on this breaking news story.
Mr Finaud believes that the Winter Olympics is the one way to ease tensions in the peninsula and build confidence. He commented, ‘All sides should take this opportunity of this resumption of dialogue and communication to initiate future steps. Continue to work on the basis of these mutual gestures, because this is the only way to create the basis for successful negotiations.’
North Korea and South Korean representatives continue to discuss details of the Winter Olympics. This weekend, these discussions continued at the International Olympic Committee headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
