On 13 September 2017, The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) warmly welcomed H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) to the Maison de la Paix.
The Secretary-General participated in a Public Discussion entitled: “ASEAN at 50: Able to Meet the Asian Challenge?” GCSP Senior Fellow and Senior Programme Advisor under Emerging Global Security Challenges, Dr Christina Schori Liang served as moderator.
This year ASEAN marks its 50th Anniversary. During his remarks at the 90-minute event, the Secretary-General discussed a number of topics including the organisation’s history, current structure and goals for the future. However, he also outlined some of the threats that pose challenges to the region, namely, the rise of terrorism, extremism, shifting power structures and cyber issues.
Before opening the discussion up to the audience, the Secretary-General closed his remarks by reiterating ASEAN’s main goal since its foundation 50 years ago, to be “…working on becoming a powerful contributor to peace and security in Asia and beyond”.
