On 7 May the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) had the honour of welcoming His Excellency Mr. Hekmat Khalil Karzai, Deputy Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, to the Maison de la Paix.
Deputy Foreign Minister Karzai, was welcomed by Ambassador Christian Dussey who emphasised the unique ability and resilience of the Afghani people, despite the numerous challenges the country has faced, and continues to face.
In his opening remarks, M. Karzai recalled the conflict in Afghanistan that has lasted for 40 years. He then shared his thoughts on the future path that will allow Afghanistan to embrace a much desired peace, emphasising the many strategies presented to create consensus around peace, not only among the Afghani population but also in neighbouring countries.
Dr Deedee Derksen, a Doctoral Fellow with GCSP’s Global Fellowship Initiative, former Dutch newspaper correspondent and expert on the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, facilitated a dynamic questions and answers session between our guest and the audience, composed of course participants, GCSP fellows and staff.
