Diplomats and Non-Diplomats Share Professional Experiences

On 23 and 24 April 2018 the GCSP hosted some 20 professionals from various backgrounds (diplomats, NGOs, private sector, academia, the military, etc.) for an executive education course on “Diplomatic Tradecraft for Non-Diplomats”.

The learning goals of the course were: to enhance knowledge and use of diplomatic tools, methods and practices; learn from the knowledge and experiences of experts and practitioners; expand the participants’ international network of security policy professionals across cultures and regions.

The speakers and participants worked on the following topics: changes to the diplomatic landscape in the 21st century; negotiation fundamentals; communication and the evolving media environment; writing for impact, and leveraging cultural differences.

The course featured lively discussions enhanced by the diverse backgrounds of the participants and GCSP staff.

The course was co-directed by John Erath, a US diplomat, currently GCSP Government Fellow, and Marc Finaud, a former French Diplomat, Senior Programme Advisor at GCSP.
