The Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and the Chinese Institute for International Strategic Studies (CIISS) held their 7th Joint Security Seminar in Beijing, on 7 March 2017.
The seminar was complemented by a meeting-seminar with the National Defence University of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, in Beijing. The Joint Security Seminar is part of a broader network of cooperation with the leading Chinese think tank, aimed at enhancing training and dialogue on security related topics of common interest.
The Joint Security Seminar with CIISS, which provided friendly and candid exchanges, focused on four prominent topics: opportunities and challenges for China-US relations under the new US Administration; the new political landscape in Europe and US-Europe evolving relationships; the threat perception from Swiss and Chinese perspectives and challenges related to crisis management in North-East Asia.
The discussions evolved against the backdrop of uncertainties in international affairs associated with new orientations of the US Administration under President Trump. Another important development that stood out in the discussions was the rapid development of North Korean nuclear and missile capabilities and the sharp increase in regional insecurity.
