GCSP and Academic Peace Orchestra Middle East (APOME) Share New Cooperative Ideas on How to Facilitate a WMD-free Zone in the Middle East

On 26 April 2018 the GCSP and The Academic Peace Orchestra Middle East (APOME) jointly organized a side event in the margins of the Geneva session of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference.

Its topic was “A WMD-free Zone in the Middle East: New Approaches from the Region”, and it was sponsored by the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation (FES) and the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF). The speakers were:

The discussion that followed addressed the importance of understanding all relevant states’ security concerns and facilitate mutually beneficial measures or platforms for negotiating an agreement on a WMD-free zone. In particular, confidence-building measures should not be seen or used as delaying tactics since they would benefit all the states of the region, and all channels for mutual communication, including in situations of conflict, must be utilized to avoid escalation and misperceptions.
