From 9 to 13 July, the GCSP organized a new executive education course on ‘Building Capacities on Arms Control in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region'. This course was funded by the Swiss Federal Departments of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) and Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). It attracted 14 participants, including officials from MENA countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Sudan) as well as Senegal and representatives of NGOs and GCSP Fellows.
Participants worked on international legal and other responses to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and conventional weapons. The heard presentations from Geneva-based experts on nuclear, chemical, biological, and conventional weapons as well as international humanitarian law. They took part in visits and exercises as well as a roundtable on the role of civil society and gender issues.
The follow-up course on these topics focusing on regional perspectives will take place in Amman (Jordan) from 7 to 12 November 2018.
