Prof. Mohamedou speaks at SOAS in London on the Arab League and its engagement with the UN

On 23-24 October, GCSP's Deputy Director and Academic Dean Prof. Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou took part in a conference on "1945 and 2015: The United Nations and the Global South, Then and Now", which took place at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London and was organised by the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS and the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies in New York.

The conference, which coincided with the 70th anniversary of the UN Charter’s entering into force, discussed the different trends:

  • regional and intellectual,
  • behind the emergence, and
  • subsequent practice of the United Nations.

Specifically, it examined how the multilateral structure has a shared history both before 1945 and after in laying the foundations of the contemporary order.

Prof. Mohamedou presented a paper on "Arab Agency and the UN Project: The League of Arab States between Universality and Regionalism", which examined the experience of the Arab League and its engagement with the UN ideals and process.

The results of the conference will be published in a special issue of the Third World Quarterly in 2016.
