A retreat in preparation of the 2015 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
On 11-12 March 2015, the GCSP organised in Glion (near Montreux), Switzerland, a retreat in preparation of the 2015 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, jointly with the Canberra-based Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (CNND, Australian National University).
The retreat was an opportunity for an in-depth and inclusive dialogue among the 40 government officials and representatives from thinks tanks and civil society that were present on CNND’s new report “Nuclear Weapons: The State of Play 2015” (by Gareth Evans, Tanya Ogilvie-White and Ramesh Thakur). The report provides a comprehensive review of the fulfillment, or lack thereof, of the commitments made by states since 2010 on nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and nuclear security and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
Two of the co-authors of the report, Chancellor of the Australian National University Professor the Hon Gareth Evans (former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, former President and CEO of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group) and the Director of CNND Professor Ramesh Thakur (former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, former Vice-Rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo, and the past Commissioner of The Responsibility to Protect), were present at the retreat to lead the discussions.
The event was supported by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
