Responding to Non-traditional Security Threats and their Impact on Democracy-Building, Peace, and Security

9th Annual Professional Training Course

From 20-22 August 2013, the GCSP held a training programme for staff of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (DPA).

The course brought together 29 participants from the DPA and a selected number of other participants from the UN system in New York (including the UN Department for Peacekeeping Operations, UNICEF, UNESCO and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs).

The training programme was directed by Dr Khalid Koser and Dr Mohammad-Mahmoud Ould Mohamedou, and included contributions by a number of experts (academics and policy practitioners), including GCSP Associate Fellow Professor Tim Sisk.

Over a period of three days, the programme covered the following subjects:

  • Syria and the Challenge of Multifaceted Crises;
  • Conflict Analysis;
  • Early Warning and Conflict Prevention;
  • Democratisation and Peacebuilding;
  • Environmental Security; and
  • Terrorism and Counter-terrorism.

The entire programme was highly interactive with lively discussions between the experts and participants and included a culminating exercise that brought together the topics addressed during the programme.

The training programme was hosted by the International Peace Institute in New York and also was kindly supported by the Swiss Permanent Mission to the United Nations (New York).
