Ms Francesca Buratti

Ms. Francesca Buratti is a strategic analyst in the field of international security and defense. She is currently serving as a China Subject Matter Expert at NATO Supreme Allied Command Transformation (SACT) in Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A. Ms. Buratti is a member of the Strategic Foresight Branch in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate, where she coordinates the Branch’s effort aiming at building and maintaining situational awareness and understanding of China and the wider Indo-Pacific region. Prior to NATO SACT, Ms. Buratti served as analyst and political advisor to NATO HQ in Brussels, the NATO Defense College in Rome, the United Nations in New York, the EU Commission’s Joint Research Center, and the International Affairs Institute. Further, she is Subject Matter Expert for the Italian Ministry of Defense, where she has recently contributed to the strategic Document “Future scenarios: trends and implications for security and defense”, released by the MOD Innovation Center. Throughout her career she gained extensive experience at political and military level, providing advice and research, monitoring, and supporting NATO efforts to understand China better. She is also experienced with NATO’s Partnership Programs, cooperative security, arms control and disarmament policies. She has strategic foresight, forecasting and horizon scanning expertise. Ms. Buratti holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Roma Tre University, with a specialization in “Peace, War and Security”. She holds a Professional Certificate in Security Manager of conflict zones, from the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI), a Specialization Course in Risk Forecasting and Scenario Analysis from the International Affairs Institute (IAI), and a Ph.D. workshop on EU-China Multi level Comparison, from the Ruhr University. Ms. Buratti is member of Women in International Security Italy (WIIS). During her educational career, she has spent an academic year in Brisbane, Australia, at the Griffith University, where she studied International Relations and security of East Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
