Matteo Fachinotti is a Swiss career diplomat. In 2023, Matteo Fachinotti was designated by the Swiss Federal Council as the next Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Comprehensive Test-ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna.
Until recently he was Deputy Head of Mission and Head of the Multilateral Division at the Swiss Embassy of Switzerland in The Hague, with the rank of Minister, and Deputy Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Until 2019, he was Head of the Political Section at the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York, with the rank of Counsellor. From 2010 to 2014 he worked in the International Organizations Division in Berne as the Deputy Head of the UN Security Council and Political Affairs Section. Previously, he worked in various positions at the Security Policy Division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Bern, and at the Swiss Embassy in Rome. Prior to joining the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 2007, he was a research analyst at the Center for Security Studies of the ETH Zurich.
He has a License in International Relations from the University of Geneva and a M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
