On 18-20 September, the New Zealand Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) hosted a regional seminar on “Engaging Parliaments of the Pacific Region in the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540” in Wellington, New Zealand. This meeting was attended by parliamentarians from Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tonga, and Vanuatu. That resolution, adopted in 2004, obligates all states to adopt and implement legislations and regulations to prevent non-state actors from accessing weapons of mass destruction and related material.
The GCSP contributed to this meeting through its preparation and chairing of sessions by its expert Marc Finaud, Head of Proliferation.
As a reminder, jointly with the IPU and other institutions, the GCSP compiled a world table of all arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament instruments.
