Expert on Afghanistan
Dr. Deedee Derksen is a Doctoral Fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. Her research studies the reconciliation and reintegration of non-state armed groups. She has recently completed a PhD at the War Studies Department of King’s College London. Her thesis examines the politics of disarmament and rearmament in Afghanistan, especially the interaction between foreign powers and their local armed allies. She has authored reports for organisations including the United States Institute of Peace and Peace Research Institute Oslo and has been a visiting scholar at the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University. She has also worked on counter-terrorism for the United Nations. Deedee previously worked as a correspondent and columnist for the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant. She authored a book on Afghanistan, which was shortlisted for a non-fiction award. She is a regular commentator on Afghanistan on television and radio.
