EU – Latin America Relations: Forging Unity Amidst Global Geopolitical Shifts - An Alumni Event
Alumni Regional Security Conversation
The foundation of European Union and Latin America relations over the past two centuries lies in shared values, robust commercial ties, and a rich historical and cultural heritage. Nevertheless, it has been challenging in recent decades to find common ground to establish a closer political and strategic relationship.
Since 1999 the EU-Latin American Summits have tried to give an institutional framework for dialogue, the identification of a shared agenda and the fostering of closer ties. Despite notable progress in the relationship, bilateralism still prevails to be the dominant approach. The absence of a clearly defined vision of EU’s expectations from Latin America as partner, along with knowledge gaps on both sides on the regions, the political instability in Latin America, the lack of regional integration, and most relevant the disinterest in global challenges, have hindered both regions to set a common agenda for political, strategic and security issues and concerted action at an international level.
Considering its intricate mix of geopolitical, socio-economic and security concerns alongside the rhetoric appeal for the shared values, how can both regions contribute as partners to face the current global geopolitical challenges and the contestation to the international liberal order?
Alumni from the Spain & Latin America Hubs with expertise in the region and other experts will discuss the regional challenges and how they affect both sides of the Atlantic.
