The Cases of Pakistan, Norway, Qatar and Switzerland
This high-level panel examines the different approaches of some of the main mediation and mediation support actors on the global scene today, with a particular focus on best practices, successes and lessons learned, both public and lesser known.
As conflict and the drivers for conflict grow ever more complex, relying on one mediator per conflict is no longer sufficient (if it ever was). The tried-and-true mediation style of Switzerland continues to be a gold standard globally, due in no small part to its long tradition of neutrality, central location in Europe, and DNA as a multilingual and multicultural society, as well as its strong reputation for discretion, trust, and political stability. At the same time, Swiss mediators are increasingly collaborating or operating in parallel with a myriad of other conflict management, resolution, and transformation actors.
Bringing together diplomats, field practitioners and experts, this discussion offers a critical assessment of emerging mediation trends and identifies opportunities for more comprehensive and sustainable conflict transformation brought by synergizing various cultural, institutional and sectoral styles of mediation and mediation support.
