Dr Alexandre Zermatten

Profile

Dr Alexandre Zermatten is Senior Adviser, Peace Operations and Peacebuilding, GCSP.  Seconded by the Swiss Department of Defense, his main focus is on a joint DDPS/GCSP project aimed at strengthening Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration & Peace Operations (defined broadly). He also supports the overall GCSP Peace Operations and Peacebuilding programme and activities. Dr. Zermatten holds a master’s degree in law from the University of Lausanne, a Certificate in Human Rights from the University of Geneva, and an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law from the Geneva Academy. His Ph.D. in International Public Law from the University of Neuchatel focused on the UN shortage of military peacekeepers and potential future prospects. Dr. Zermatten has been deployed as peacekeeper to Korea/NNSC (as Deputy), UNTSO (as Chief OGG-D), MONUSCO, MINUSMA, KFOR & UNMOGIP. He worked at the Conduct & Discipline Service as Case Officer in UNHQ/NYC for 4 years. Prior to joining the GCSP, he worked in the private sector for 5 years as in-house counsel in Switzerland & California. Dr. Zermatten holds the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Swiss Armed Forces, as Legal Adviser/Chief PoW. His native language is French and is fluent in English & German.
