Dr Lorenzo Subissi
Biochemist by background, Dr Lorenzo Subissi has a PhD on infectious diseases, which focused on studying SARS-CoV-1 proofreading mechanisms from Aix Marseille University and a Master of Sciences in Epidemiology from LSHTM. He is also an alumus of the European public health microbiology training programme from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Before joining WHO, he has focused on outbreak response and operational research on emerging diseases in various settings (i.e. Ebola in Guinea, Zika in French Polynesia and Martinique, Yellow fever in Angola, Chikungunya and mpox in DRC, necrotizing fasciitis in Sao Tome and Principe). Currently, he is Scientist in the Emerging Threats Diagnostics & Laboratory Biosafety Unit in the Epidemic and Pandemic Management department, within the Health Emergencies Programme at WHO headquarters, Geneva. His current work focuses on control of pathogens with epidemic and pandemic potential and includes diagnostics preparedness, outbreak response, development of guidelines, coordination of laboratory networks, and monitoring of virus evolution.
