Profile

Dr Peter Batchelor is a peace and development specialist with more than 30 years of experience in the UN, national government, academia and NGOs. He joined GCSP as an Associate Fellow in 2023 after 20 years working as a senior manager in the United Nations. He has led UN teams in HQ (New York and Geneva) and in different field operations in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and the Caucasus. His last position was in New York as head of the Crisis and Fragility Policy and Engagement Team in UNDP’s Crisis Bureau. Since 2023 he has also worked for the Principles for Peace Foundation (based in Geneva), and the Article 109 Coalition for UN Charter Reform (hosted by GCSP). Between 2000 and 2004 Peter was the project director of the Small Arms Survey, hosted by the Geneva Graduate Institute. During this time, he was also an adjunct faculty member of GCSP. Prior to 2000 Peter was an advisor to the Mandela Administration in South Africa on arms trade, arms industry and defence budget issues. Peter is an economist by training and has a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He has published widely on peace and development issues. He is a South African national.
