Mr Antoine Roth

Born in Geneva, Antoine Roth is a scholar of international relations specialising in East Asian
politics and diplomacy. He joined the GCSP as a Fellow in 2026, after returning home following
more than a decade living, researching and teaching in Japan. From 2020 to 2026, he was an
Assistant Professor at Tohoku University, combining research and teaching with the management
of the Faculty of Law’s international cooperation. He previously worked at the University of
Tokyo, the United Nations University and the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan. His research
focuses on Chinese and Japanese foreign policy, Sino-Japanese relations, diplomacy and the
evolution of international order in East Asia. He maintains research ties with the University of
Tokyo through an ongoing project on the historical development of East Asian international order.
He is the author of A Hierarchical Vision of Order: Understanding Chinese Foreign Policy in Asia
(Bristol University Press, 2023) and has published on East Asian diplomacy, regional order and
Japan’s role in the Indo-Pacific. He holds a PhD from the University of Tokyo, an MA from
George Washington University and a BA from the University of Geneva.
