Speech: Redefining Multilateralism in a New Geopolitical Era

09 December 2024

At the 2024 Processes of International Negociation (PIN) conference in Geneva, Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Executive Director of the GCSP, addressed the urgent challenges facing multilateralism in today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. He noted that “In an increasingly unpredictable world, the key challenge is how to adapt multilateralism to balance the interests of traditional powers while embracing the growing influence of emerging actors and coalitions.” Highlighting the rise of nationalism, political fragmentation, and great-power competition, he called for reforms to overcome deadlocks in international negotiations. Greminger emphasized the importance of inclusivity, urging that the voices of the Global South and civil society be better represented in decision-making processes.
