Ms Laylo Merali
Position(s) Humanitarian assistance and security professional

Prior to joining GCSP as a Fellow, Laylo Merali’s career focused on humanitarian assistance and international development, most recently in Tajikistan with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). Laylo’s work with AKDN included research, analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and project support for disaster risk reduction, migration, refugee, and post-conflict and post-disaster recovery activities. As part of this work, Laylo liaised with leaders from Government, international institutions and humanitarian organizations. In addition to AKDN, she has managed and recruited for international education programs, provided advice and developed content to build students’ numerical skills through global affairs-themed educational materials, and performed benchmarking analysis about international organizations’ communications strategies. Laylo’s research activities include post-Soviet states’ strategic relations with world powers, gender and conflict, and media and others’ roles during and after civil conflict. Laylo earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and International Public Law from the American University of Central Asia
in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and her Master’s degree in International and European Security from the University of Geneva—co-delivered with GCSP where Laylo completed the Leadership in International Security Course. Laylo also completed courses in strategy, entrepreneurship and business core skills at Harvard Business School Online. Laylo speaks English, Farsi, Russian and French. She is originally from Khorog in Tajikistan’s Pamir mountain region, and now resides in Geneva.
