In his opening remarks, Ambassador Thomas Greminger, Executive Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), welcomed the launch of The Essential Convergence: Global Compact on Extreme AI Risks and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing the most serious risks posed by advanced AI. He thanked the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the ICT4Peace Foundation for their partnership, and congratulated Sundeep Waslekar and the Strategic Foresight Group for producing a report that highlights emerging global consensus on practical safeguards against catastrophic AI risks. The report argues that, despite geopolitical tensions, countries are increasingly aligning on minimum measures to reduce extreme AI threats and strengthen international peace and security.
